Echo's Footage Reveals An Injured Wilson Fisk
During Saturday’s D23 Expo, Marvel revealed the first footage of Echo, that will star Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, who is returning to the character from Hawkeye, and will see the return of everyone’s favorite mob boss, Wilson Fisk the Kingpin.
At the end of last year’s Hawkeye, Maya learned that her uncle, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), not only organized to have her father, William Lopez killed, but also he was coming after her when he thought she was betraying him.
After a rather unpleasant encounter with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a wounded Fisk tried to seek help from Maya, but she pointed a gun at his face and shot him. As the camera panned away, we were left wondering what happened next.
This closely resembles an image from the comics where Maya shoots hi for the exact same reason.
In the comics Fisk ends up blinded and has to wear bandages on both of his eyes, but eventually he heals. According to the Echo footage description he is wearing an eye patch on only one eye, meaning his injury is different from the one he sustained in the source material. The footage was not released online.
But speaking of the series, Echo will see Maya Lopez get out of New York and go in a spiritual and emotional journey according to the Marvel official synopsis.
“The origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”
Joining Cox and D’Onofrio in the series are Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, and Devery Jacobs as Julie. Graham Greene, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, and Cody Lightning have also been cast in the series in currently-unknown roles.
"It's just so crazy that I'm getting my own show after Hawkeye. That was like my first acting role, ever," Cox previously said of her MCU role. "I don't know why they're giving me this opportunity, but I'm just grateful. I'm excited for the support and being able to advocate for the Deaf community. We want to have that equality and get more people involved. I'm just so grateful for all of the opportunities I've been given."
She continued, "It's crazy how much my life has already changed because I was a college dropout. I worked at a factory. I'm so excited to show people who I am and what I can do, what anybody can do."
Maya Lopez has been a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Alaqua Cox shines in the role that seems to have been written for her, as she is also Native American and deaf like Maya Lopez, but that has not stopped her from becoming a beloved character and an overall badass in her own right.
ECHO is currently filming, and is set to premiere in the Summer of 2023, on Disney+.
